Design Your Own Nameplate Online: A Complete Guide

29 Aug 2026

Most nameplates are chosen from a catalogue. You pick the closest thing to what you wanted and live with the compromise — a font you don't love, a size that doesn't suit the wall, a design made for someone else's door.

Our design studio removes that step. You lay out your own NameBell on screen, see it previewed on your actual wall, and order the design you made. It's free, it runs in your browser, and it needs no account.

Four questions, then you're designing

The studio doesn't drop you onto a blank canvas. It asks four short questions first, and you have a complete plate by the end of them.

1. Which product?

A NameBell is a doorbell and a nameplate in one piece, so the first choice is which bell sits behind the plate.

Choose on function rather than looks. Every design option that follows is available on both.

2. Which plate?

Five sizes and shapes:

  • 11×7" landscape or portrait — suits most flat and apartment doors.
  • 15×10" landscape or portrait — better for independent houses and gates, where the plate is read from further away.
  • 15" circle — a round plate that sits particularly well on wooden doors.

Portrait suits a narrow strip of wall beside the door; landscape suits the space above a bell or handle.

Measure first

Check the clear wall space beside your door before you start. It takes thirty seconds and settles the size question immediately.

3. What name?

Type the name that will appear on the plate. You can change it later, so it isn't a commitment.

Fill the plate

Including "The" and "Family" — as in The Sharma Family — reads more formally and fills the plate better than a surname alone. A single short word can look lost on a 15×10" plate.

4. Which starting style?

Rather than asking you to assemble a look from nothing, the studio offers a ready-made style you can adopt in one click. It sets the background, border, font and colours together, and everything stays editable afterwards.

The canvas: what you can change

Then the canvas opens. This is where a design becomes specific to your door.

Text

Tap any text to edit it. You get 25 fonts, grouped so you aren't scrolling an undifferentiated list:

  • Script — Great Vibes, Allura, Alex Brush, Parisienne and others. Flowing and calligraphic.
  • Serif — Cinzel, Playfair Display, Trajan, Castellar. Classical and formal.
  • Display — Bebas Neue, Anton, Oswald, Montserrat. Bold and highly legible.
  • Tech — Orbitron, Exo, Audiowide, Rajdhani. Geometric and modern.
  • Decorative — Old London, Samarkan. Gothic and ornamental.

Set size with a slider, pick a colour from the swatches or enter an exact hex value, and apply bold or italic. You can also add more text boxes — a house number, a flat number, or a second line under the family name.

On script fonts

They are beautiful but lose legibility at distance. If the plate will be read from a gate rather than arm's length, a serif or display face carries much better.

Background and border

Build a gradient from your own colour stops, choose from trending backgrounds, or upload your own image entirely.

Borders can be neon — a lit outline in two colours that blends across the edge — or solid, gradient, or none at all. The neon border is what gives the plate presence after dark, which is when a doorbell is most often used.

Stickers and artwork

Add stickers, or upload your own image as an overlay — a family emblem, a religious symbol, a logo for an office door. This is the part a catalogue cannot do, and where a nameplate stops being a product and becomes yours.

See it before you buy it

This is where the studio earns its keep. A design that looks striking on a bright monitor can be underwhelming beside an actual door, and there are three ways to check.

Wall preview

Places your design next to a real door at realistic scale, so you can judge whether the size and contrast work in context. Switch between indoor and outdoor scenes — the same plate reads very differently in hallway light and daylight. You can save the preview as an image to share.

3D preview

Rotates the plate so you can see it at an angle, with its actual depth. Useful because nobody approaches a door straight on — you see a nameplate obliquely as you walk up, and a glowing border reads quite differently from the side.

AR preview on your phone

Open the studio on a phone and you can place your design on your own wall through the camera. Hold the phone up beside your door and see the finished plate at true size, in your actual light, before anything is made.

If you do one thing before ordering, do this

The AR preview answers the question no product photo can: will this look right on my door?

Check these three things before you order

  1. Legibility at distance. Step back from your screen. If you cannot read it from two metres, it will not read from the gate either.
  2. Spelling. Read the name aloud, letter by letter. A nameplate is made once.
  3. Contrast. Colours that look elegant on a bright screen can disappear in shade.

How ordering works

When you're happy, hit Order. Your design is attached to a WhatsApp message and our chat opens — no forms, no account, no re-describing what you wanted.

Each design carries a design code that travels with the message, so we can restore your exact layout down to the colour values. What you designed is what gets made.

If you'd rather not use WhatsApp, leave a phone number and any special instructions instead, and we'll come back to you. Delivery runs five to seven days.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account?
No. The studio is free and requires no sign-up. Design first, decide later.

Can I save a design and come back to it?
Yes. Designs can be shared by link, so you can get an opinion before committing.

What is the difference between NameBell and Video NameBell?
Both include a personalised, backlit nameplate. The Video NameBell adds an HD camera, two-way audio and motion alerts, so you can see and speak to whoever is at the door.

Can I put more than one line on the plate?
Yes. Add as many text boxes as you need — a family name with a house number underneath is a common layout.

How does ordering work?
Your finished design is sent to us over WhatsApp with a code that restores it exactly, so nothing is lost in translation. You can also just leave a phone number instead.

Can I order more than one?
Yes — bulk orders for housing societies, hotels and corporate gifting are available. Contact us on WhatsApp for a quote.
